Checkpoints and Chokepoints
Exhibition / Civic Room, Glasgow / 26th–28th July, Open Daily 12pm–6pm
Life on our planet is characterised by increasing flows of migration. According to UN statistics, the number of international migrants worldwide reached 244 million in 2015, up from 222 million in 2010 and 173 million in 2000. At the same time, a recent development consists in the vertical technological stacks through which horizontal movement over the earth’s surface takes place. Most human action is now intensely captured, doubled, imaged and imagined, in layers of digital technology that supplement, complement and sometimes replace prior physical and political geographies. Infrastructure, platforms, politics and policies continually encounter and clash with the human, lived realities of migration, as well as mediating, fracturing and reconstructing them.
Beginning in February 2017, Checkpoints and Chokepoints is a four-month intensive design research programme that investigates cultures of migration in the scope of design. Initiated by Vinca Kruk (Metahaven), Thomas Castro (LUST) and Simone C. Niquille (Technoflesh), the ‘post-studio’ model programme was structured around field research trips to crucial zones within the EU such as locations in France, Belgium and Italy. Of the four participating designers, Tom Joyes and Hanna Rullmann will be presenting their research as the Checkpoints and Chokepoints show lands in the Civic Room, Glasgow between the 26th and 28th of July.
